Over 60 people – mostly minority ethnic women – attended NICEM’s launch of our shadow report to the CEDAW committee, and two associated research reports.
The launch was open by Anna Lo, MLA, who recommended the report to the audience and particularly noticed the importance of intersectionality, which formed the cornerstone of NICEM’s shadow submission.
Panelists then heard from Professor Monica McWilliams and Priyamveda Yarnell, authors of the report on experiences of domestic violence among BME women; Sarah Isal-Williamson, author of the report on the experiences of BME women in NI coming out of the survey completed by over 400 women; NICEM’s Legal Policy Officer Karen McLaughlin, who detailed the critical points in NICEM’s submission; and four of the delegates to the CEDAW hearing in July.

The audience then had the opportunity to address questions to the panel on issues raised within the three reports.
We would like to thank everyone who came along to last night’s launch, and urge you to stay involved with the CEDAW process through NICEM’s social media outlets. We will also be building on the work already done after the hearing, addressing issues arising out of the research and continuing to work to empower BME women in their communities.
